How to make yourself study for exams?

Music or even sounds can help you focus. It sounds strange, but if you give your brain something to latch onto, your mind stops getting distracted by other stimuli.

What usually helps

Everyone has their own habits and their own recipes for success. For example, I manage to work great with the artist nervous_testpilot, or with the soundtrack album to Doom 2016. Try it – maybe it will help.

But if you’re still searching, then I would start with the following options:

  • white noise
  • pink or brown noise
  • nature sounds / rhythmic background noises (airplane, cars, and so on)
  • instrumental music without lyrics.

Why it works

Try any of the noises or lofi beats right now. Why it might work:

  • The brain is constantly looking for external stimuli. This is an evolutionary feature – it helps recognize danger in time, and you can’t turn it off. But stimuli aren’t as noticeable against the background of noise, and you can concentrate better.
  • Regular beats stimulate beta waves, which help you focus and work.
  • The music starts immediately and plays on a loop. No pauses, no agony of choice – you turn it on and forget it.
